Thailand 2023
Screen printing image selection from a trip to Thailand a few years back
In January 2023 I headed off for a month in Thailand, wanting a change of scene from the dark and miserable Scottish winter, and travelled with a new camera in hand.
Working as a photographer often feels weighed down with heavy kit, camera bags, lighting kit and stands. While I need this volume of kit on commercial jobs, it’s freeing when I can simplify things. I’d stopped taking photos on holidays on my camera and was only using my iPhone because the camera felt like work. Changing to a new system and a cropped sensor shifted the experience for me, making things lighter, and the quality of a Fuji is beautiful.
While I was in Thailand I had a few days in Bangkok, then headed south to Krabi before visiting the nearby islands, including Phi Phi and Koh Yao Noi, then travelled up to Chiang Mai and into the countryside around it.

I’m doing a course at the Printmakers Workshop in Edinburgh next weekend. I spent this weekend looking at suitable images to use for screen printing, converting them to black and white first to see how they might translate. It seems to be a normal part of the process and it helped me see which ones had enough contrast and simplicity. I’m wanting to explore more printing techniques such as photolithography and Toyobo processes. I’ve always shied away from print but I’m hoping to find a process I enjoy, something that slows things down a bit and lets me create work away from the constant use of screens and towards something more tangible.
